Vendee Headland, 105 x 85 cms, Oil

Documenting his journeys abroad in sketchbooks, Andrew has amassed a vast collection of drawings featuring Provencal architecture, sun drenched piazzas in Sicily and the unspoiled beaches of the Mediterranean. His new paintings are imbued with light, casting dramatic shadows and creating a palette of intense, vibrant colours.

Although Andrew often seeks out an aerial viewpoint from which to sketch, many pieces in this new collection capture towns and cities such as Saint Paul de Vence and Lyon from ground level. Figures emerge from the paintings head on and the viewer is drawn into the hustle and bustle evoked by the energetic and expressive handling of paint. By positioning himself in amongst the people and everyday activity, Andrew's paintings offer glimpses into the possible narratives of tourists and locals alike.
